How to practice playing Ukulele

With a thin fretboard and four strings, most people can easily learn how to play the ukulele. Learning how to play is simple, provided you take the time to practice. Some quick advices:

  1. Learn how to keep your ukulele tuned. Buy a digital tuner or use one online, if you wish to practice near a computer. Digital tuners will tell you if the notes are too high or too low, whereas with online tuners you will have to match the notes they produce using your ear. The more you tune your instrument, the faster you will be able to go through this process, and you will even learn how to tune it by ear.
  2. Choose a moment to practice, preferably every day. You can spend minutes or hours practising, but don’t stop doing it on a regular basis, if not you will not improve.
  3. Play slowly in the beginning. Whether you may be playing songs or practising chords, start slowly, and move on to play at full speed.
  4. Practice with a metronome to hold on to the rhythm. You can buy a mechanical or digital one. Learning to hold on to the rhythm will help you when it comes to playing with someone else, and it will improve your solo interpretation.
  5. Practice in front of a recording device, such as a tape recorder, a microphone, or a camera with a built-in mic. Listen to your recordings to know what you need to work on and to find out about any mistake you make when you play.
  6. Find the chords to the songs you like and play them on your ukulele. Many songs for electric guitar can be transcribed to ukulele, as long as you know the chords. Play with the original recordings, though you may have to play them a little slower with some audio program until you feel comfortable with the chord changes.
